Combined Degrees
Combined degrees are studied over four years and will only be available to students who have demonstrated ability to undertake this pattern of study and will prepare graduates to take on complex clinical responsibilities in the health care system.
In year 1 students study in the undergraduate degree of their choice from the selection offered. Subject to meeting continuing admission requirements, students will study in both their undergraduate degree and the Master of Nursing in years 2 and 3. Year 4 is exclusively devoted to the Master of Nursing. Students are not permitted to continue on to Year 4 prior to successfully completing their undergraduate degree.
Graduates can select from a wide and growing range of practice areas in both the public and private sectors including acute care hospitals, trauma and emergency, paediatrics, mental health, community nursing, palliative care, aged care and rural and remote settings. Nurses also work in the pharmaceutical industry and other health related fields.
Registration - Nurses and Midwives Board of NSW
Those students who have successfully completed a course leading to registration will be eligible to apply for registration with the Nurses and Midwives Board of NSW. The Nurses Act of NSW specifies certain conditions that applicants for registration as a nurse are required to meet. For further information please contact the Nurses and Midwives Board of NSW.
The Combined Degree course and the Nurses and Midwives Board NSW requires pre-registered nursing students to undertake (approximately 1,080 hours) of clinical placements in health care facilities monitored or operated by the NSW Department of Health. The NSW Health Department has an “Occupational Screening And Vaccination Against Infectious Diseases” policy (PD2007_006) that applies to students on clinical placements. For your information, it is envisaged that the University of Sydney’s pre-registered nursing students will commence clinical placements in health care facilities in June/July of the 2nd year of their nursing studies.
Please read the NSW Health Vaccination Requirements document so you are aware of the NSW Health department's requirements.
