Master of Nursing (Graduate Entry)

Admission requires students to have successfully completed at least one tertiary level unit of study in Human Biology or an equivalent area of study. Students whose previous study does not satisfy this requirement will need to successfully complete a unit of study in Human Biology before commencing the Master of Nursing. An online (WebCT) Human Biology unit of study is offered by the Faculty to students needing to complete their studies in this area before enrolling in the Master of Nursing (Graduate Entry).

The Master of Nursing is a two year graduate entry, pre-registration course for students with previous tertiary qualifications. Graduates can select from a wide and growing range of practice areas in both the public and private sectors including acute care hospitals, trauma and emergency, paediatrics, mental health, community nursing, palliative care, aged care and rural and remote settings. Nurses also work in the pharmaceutical industry and other health related fields.

Those students who have successfully completed a course leading to registration will be eligible to apply for registration with the Nurses and Midwives Board of NSW. The Nurses Act of NSW specifies certain conditions that applicants for registration as a nurse are required to meet. For further information please contact the Nurses and Midwives Board of NSW

The Master of Nursing (Graduate Entry) course and the Nurses and Midwives Board NSW requires pre-registered nursing students to undertake (approximately 1,080 hours) of clinical placements in health care facilities monitored or operated by the NSW Department of Health. The NSW Health Department has an “Occupational Screening And Vaccination Against Infectious Diseases” policy (PD2007_006) that applies to students on clinical placements. For your information, it is envisaged that the University of Sydney’s pre-registered nursing students will commence clinical placements in health care facilities during the fifth week of the first year of their nursing studies.

Therefore, if you are seriously considering applying for the Master of Nursing (Graduate Entry) course you are urged to read the following information related this policy prior to submitting your application:

Human Biology WebCT Unit of Study
This unit is usually run in the second half of the year. It is strongly recommended that international applicants complete this unit in the year prior to admission for semester 1, in order to allow sufficient time for visa approval processes.

This unit of study is designed for students wishing to enrol in the Master of Nursing (Graduate Entry) but who do not have any tertiary study in human biology. It assumes a familiarity with basic concepts of anatomy and physiology. All major body systems are reviewed, stressing their integration via neuro-hormonal control in the following sequence: physiology of oxygenation, metabolism and elimination, the immune response and reproduction.
