Graduate certificate
A graduate certificate will enable students to
- explore the complexity of and uncertainty in practice within a recognised specialist area
- develop discipline-specific knowledge and skills
- build capacity for clinical judgement and practice.
In 2010, the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery offers graduate certificates in the following areas:
- Cancer and Haematology Nursing
- Clinical Nursing
- Clinical Trials Practice*
- Emergency Nursing
- Intensive Care Nursing
- Mental Health Nursing
Graduate certificates can be used as stand-alone postgraduate study or as a pathway into a master’s degree. Students who have not studied at a tertiary level for some time often use this route.
A graduate certificate can only be studied part-time by local students. Since international students can only apply for full-time study, they are not eligible to study at graduate certificate level in the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery.
Admission
Admission to a graduate certificate is open to all nurses registered in Australia.
Mode of attendance
Each unit of study may have up to five face-to-face study days.
Student learning is further supported by the University’s eLearning.
Fees
Graduate certificates are offered as Commonwealth supported courses for local students. Australian citizens are able to pay the cost of the course up front with a discount at a rate of approximately $416 per unit of study; or defer the full payment by taking out a HECS-HELP loan which is approximately $520 per unit of study (2009 fee rates quoted). Australian Permanent Residents and New Zealand citizens are also Commonwealth supported however the full cost per unit of study (i.e. approximately $520) must be paid up front without a discount (2009 fee rates quoted). Please note these figures are indicative only and may be subject to change. You can also expect a slight fee increase each year.
Duration and credit points
The graduate certificate is two semesters part-time. There is no full-time option. There is one intake per year in March.
The graduate certificate requires a total of 24 credit points.
Award units taken at graduate certificate level may also count towards a graduate diploma or master’s degree.
Non-award units of study
Previously completed non-award units of study may be credited towards a graduate certificate.
