Mr Murray Fisher
Senior Lecturer

Murray has been nursing since 1985 and most of his clinical experience is in adult intensive care and coronary care nursing. Murray has 14 years nursing education experience, holding positions within the hospital sector and the university sector. In 1991 he completed a Bachelor of Nursing degree with an intensive care major (UTS) and completed an Intensive Therapy Nursing Certificate at St. Vincent's Hospital, Sydney. He has since completed a Master of Health Personnel Education (UNSW) and is currently completing a PhD (University of Sydney), for which his thesis is titled 'Masculinities and Men in Nursing.' For the past ten years, Murray has worked in the Faculty of Nursing, where he has coordinated the cardiac stream of the Master of Nursing (Critical Care) and several of the critical care units of study including the critical care practice units.
Over the past 10 years Murray has published 12 peer reviewed journal articles and given over thirty conference presentations on a variety of professional and nursing related topics. Murray has recently been commissioned to write two book chapters.
Research interests and areas of expertise
Murray has research interests in gender and health, including men's health; men as nurses and women's health. Murray also has interests in competency assessment and nurse education, clinical nursing practice including critical care nursing, medication errors and patient education and evidence-based practice and research utilisation in nursing.
Current projects
At present Murray is working on the following projects:
- Women's experiences and behaviour modification following an acute cardiac event;
- Student nurses' attitudes to research;
- Investigating the experience of a negotiated care model in paediatric nursing;
- Men's experiences of nursing: a life history project.

Areas of teaching and research supervision
Areas of teaching
Murray has two areas of teaching. First, he teaches and coordinates units of study in the area of critical care and high acuity nursing. Second, Murray teaches and coordinates a 3rd Year elective unit of study titled “Masculinities and Men's Health Nursing.”
